    What is ISO 45001:2018?

ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OH&S MS). It replaced OHSAS 18001 and provides a framework for organisations to proactively improve worker safety, reduce workplace risks, and create better working conditions.

Why ISO 45001 Matters for South African Businesses

South Africa's regulatory environment — governed by the OHS Act (Act 85 of 1993) — sets the baseline. ISO 45001 goes further by establishing a systematic, internationally recognised management system that:

    • Reduces workplace incidents by 40-60% on average
    • Lowers workers' compensation costs significantly
    • Satisfies tender requirements — many government and private sector tenders now require ISO 45001
    • Demonstrates due diligence — strengthens your legal defence under Section 37 of the OHS Act
    • Improves BEE scoring — management systems contribute to enterprise development
    • Enables international trade — essential for companies exporting or working with multinationals
