Why Most Students Fail NEBOSH IGC — and How You Won't

NEBOSH does not publish an official global IGC pass rate. OHS Compliance Group provides preparation and tutor support. A verified first-attempt cohort pass rate is not available here; preparation, technique and understanding assessment requirements remain important.

This guide shares the exam strategies our facilitators teach daily in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban — and to our online students across South Africa.

Understanding the NEBOSH IGC Assessment Structure

Before diving into tips, let's clarify what you're preparing for:

GIC1: Management of Health and Safety (Open Book Exam)

    • Format: Scenario-based open book exam
    • Duration: 24 hours to complete (once opened)
    • Questions: Based on a workplace scenario — typically a fictitious organisation
    • Word count: Approximately 3,000–4,000 words total
    • Weighting: 50% of your overall grade

    GIC2: Risk Assessment (Practical Application)

    • Format: Workplace-based risk assessment
    • Duration: Conducted in your own workplace or a suitable environment
    • Submission: Written risk assessment with commentary
    • Weighting: 50% of your overall grade

GIC1 Open Book Exam: 8 Essential Tips

Tip 1: Read the Scenario Three Times Before Writing

The scenario is your entire exam foundation. On your first read, get the overview. On your second read, highlight key issues, hazards, and management failures. On your third read, make notes linking scenario details to specific NEBOSH syllabus topics.

South African context: Scenarios may reference international workplaces, but you can strengthen answers by referencing the OHSA and South African regulations where relevant.

Tip 2: Answer the Question Asked — Not the Question You Wanted

This is the number one reason students lose marks. NEBOSH uses specific command words that tell you exactly what's required:

    • Identify — name or list (brief, no explanation needed)
    • Give — provide a short answer
    • Outline — provide a brief description with key points
    • Explain — provide detailed reasoning showing understanding
    • Describe — paint a picture with sufficient detail
    • Discuss — examine the topic from multiple angles, considering advantages and disadvantages
    • Comment on — give your professional opinion supported by evidence
    • Justify — provide reasons to support a particular action

Critical mistake: Writing a 500-word essay when the question says "identify" — you'll waste time and still not earn more marks.

Tip 3: Use the NEBOSH Marking Structure

NEBOSH uses a points-based marking system. Each valid point typically earns 1 mark. This means:

    • A 10-mark question requires approximately 10 distinct valid points
    • Quality matters, but so does breadth of coverage
    • Don't write everything you know about one point — make your point clearly and move on
    • Use bullet points for identify/outline questions to ensure each point is visible to the examiner

Tip 4: Structure Your Answers Professionally

NEBOSH rewards well-structured answers. For longer questions:

    1. Opening statement — briefly address the question
    2. Main body — organised with clear headings or numbered points
    3. Conclusion — summarise or make a recommendation if appropriate

Use the scenario to contextualise your answers — generic textbook answers score lower than answers that reference specific details from the scenario.

Tip 5: Manage Your Time Ruthlessly

You have 24 hours, but don't use all of it writing. Plan your time:

    • Hours 1-2: Read scenario, plan answers, create outlines
    • Hours 3-8: Write your answers (allocate time per question based on marks)
    • Hours 9-10: Review, edit, and proofread
    • Remaining time: Buffer for unexpected issues

Don't overthink it. Spending 24 hours on continuous writing leads to diminishing quality. Work in focused blocks with breaks.

Tip 6: Reference the Scenario Constantly

Every answer should demonstrate how you've applied your knowledge to the scenario. Generic answers that could apply to any workplace will score lower. For example:

Weak answer: "Training should be provided to workers."

Strong answer: "Given the scenario describes new workers operating machinery without supervision (paragraph 3), the organisation should implement a structured induction programme including task-specific training on the lathe machines, with competency verification before unsupervised work is permitted."

Tip 7: Cover the Hierarchy of Controls

When asked about control measures, NEBOSH loves the hierarchy of controls. Always work through:

    1. Elimination → 2. Substitution → 3. Engineering → 4. Administrative → 5. PPE

Don't jump straight to PPE — examiners expect you to demonstrate understanding of the full hierarchy.

Tip 8: Don't Forget Human Factors

NEBOSH places significant emphasis on human factors — why people make mistakes and how organisations can influence behaviour. Include references to:

    • Safety culture and leadership
    • Competence and training
    • Communication
    • Fatigue and workload
    • Motivation and supervision
    • Organisational factors (resources, time pressure)

GIC2 Practical Assessment: 7 Essential Tips

Tip 9: Choose Your Workplace Carefully

Select a workplace with visible, identifiable hazards. A construction site, workshop, warehouse, or manufacturing environment will yield better observations than a modern office.

If you're between jobs or work remotely, ask a friend or family member if you can assess their workplace (with permission).

Tip 10: Use All Your Senses

Don't just look — use all your senses during the inspection:

    • See — unguarded machinery, poor housekeeping, missing signage
    • Hear — excessive noise, alarms, communication issues
    • Smell — chemical odours, fumes, dust
    • Feel — excessive heat, vibration, slippery surfaces

Tip 11: Follow a Systematic Route

Plan a logical route through the workplace. Don't wander randomly. Start at the entrance and work systematically through each area:

    • Car park and external areas
    • Reception and common areas
    • Corridors and walkways
    • Work areas and workshops
    • Storage areas
    • Welfare facilities
    • Emergency exits and routes

Tip 12: Identify at Least 15-20 Hazards

NEBOSH expects a comprehensive assessment. Aim for 15-20 distinct hazards across different categories:

    • Physical hazards (noise, temperature, radiation)
    • Mechanical hazards (machinery, tools, vehicles)
    • Chemical hazards (substances, dust, fumes)
    • Ergonomic hazards (manual handling, workstation design)
    • Fire hazards (ignition sources, fuel, escape routes)
    • Electrical hazards (wiring, equipment, static)
    • Working at height hazards
    • Housekeeping hazards (storage, cleanliness, access)

Tip 13: Use the Correct Risk Assessment Format

NEBOSH provides a template — use it exactly as provided. Your risk assessment must include:

    • Hazard identified
    • Who might be harmed and how
    • Existing controls
    • Risk rating (likelihood × severity)
    • Additional controls required
    • Priority for action
    • Review date

    Tip 14: Prioritise Your Findings

After listing hazards, NEBOSH expects you to prioritise them based on risk level. Show you can distinguish between:

    • Immediate actions — hazards posing imminent danger
    • Short-term actions — significant risks requiring attention within days/weeks
    • Medium-term actions — moderate risks to be addressed through planned improvement
    • Long-term actions — lower risks managed through routine review

Tip 15: Write a Professional Recommendations Summary

End with clear, actionable recommendations for management:

    • What needs to be done (specific)
    • Who should be responsible
    • What resources are needed
    • Suggested timescale
    • How effectiveness will be measured

Bonus: Common Mistakes South African Students Make

Based on our experience training 60,000+ professionals:

    1. Writing in Afrikaans or mixing languages — submit everything in English
    2. Focusing only on South African legislation — NEBOSH is an international qualification; reference international standards
    3. Copying from textbooks or the internet — NEBOSH uses plagiarism detection software
    4. Leaving the exam to the last minute — the 24-hour window is generous but still requires planning
    5. Not practising risk assessments beforehand — do at least 2-3 practice assessments before your GIC2
    6. Submitting without proofreading — spelling and grammar matter for professionalism
